With the conclusion of the fall semester fast approaching, coaches and student-athletes are reminded of University and NCAA regulations on athletics activities during Thanksgiving break, Concentrated Study and Final Exam periods.
Per NCAA Bylaw 22.214.171.124.1, student-athletes may not participate in any countable athletically related activities (CARA's) outside of the playing season during any institutional vacation period. Further, NCAA Bylaw 126.96.36.199 prohibits any CARA's outside the playing season one week prior to the beginning of the final exam period.
The official LSU Thanksgiving holiday begins at 12:30 pm on Wed., Nov. 25 and runs through Sun., Nov. 29. Final exams begin on Mon., Dec 7. Therefore, all CARAs for the fall semester for out-of-season sports must cease at 12:29 pm on Wed., Nov. 25 until the dates listed below (based on each team's declared playing season):
||Jan. 13 (*in-season until Nov. 27)|
Additionally, per University policy, required team functions/gatherings are prohibited during the Concentrated Study and Final Exam periods. Therefore, the last opportunities to conduct team functions such as occasional meals and student-athlete appearances are Mon., Nov. 30 and Tues., Dec. 1. The Concentrated Study Period begins on Wed., Dec. 2.
Just a reminder: Any activity in which a coach is present is considered countable (other than meetings initiated by student-athletes in which no other countable activities occur). For more information on what constitutes a countable activity vs. non-countable activity, click HERE.
All countable activities are permitted during Thanksgiving break, which begins at 12:30 pm on Wed., Nov. 25 and runs through Sun., Nov. 29.
In-season sports may conduct countable athletically related activities (CARA's) during the Concentrated Study and Final Exam Periods (if declared in the team's playing season), but must refrain from other team functions such as occasional meals and student-athlete appearances, per University policy. The Concentrated Study period begins on Wed., Dec. 2 and the Final Exam period concludes on Sat., Dec. 12.
In-season CARA regulations (4 hours per day, 20 hours per week, at least one day off per week) are still in effect through the end of final exams. Thereafter, there is no limit on daily or weekly hours during the winter vacation period (Sun., Dec. 13 through Tues., Jan. 12).
The following conditions also apply based on each team's declared playing season:
||No CARAs from Nov. 25 to Nov. 28, Dec. 5 to Dec. 12 and Dec. 16 to Dec. 27|
|Swimming & Diving
||No CARAs from Nov. 25 to Nov. 29, Dec. 5 to Dec. 12 and Dec. 20 to Dec. 27 |
|Track & Field
||No CARAs from Nov. 25 to Nov. 29 and Dec. 18 to Jan. 3|
Any activity in which a coach is present is considered countable (other than meetings initiated by student-athletes during which no other countable activities occur). The only exception to this rule is for sports with the safety exception - in this case, Gymnastics, Swimming & Diving and Track & Field - which allows a coach to be present during voluntary individual workouts in LSU's practice facilities when a student-athlete uses equipment for that sport. The safety exceptions do not apply to strength and/or conditioning workouts.
