Upcoming Restrictions on Athletics Activities
11/20/2012

With the conclusion of the fall semester fast approaching, coaches and student-athletes should be aware of University and NCAA restrictions on team activities during the Thanksgiving holiday, Concentrated Study and Final Exam periods.

Out-of-season sports

In accordance with NCAA Bylaw 17.1.6.2.1.1, student-athletes may not participate in any countable athletically related activities (CARAs) outside of the playing season during any institutional vacation period. Further, NCAA Bylaw 17.1.6.2 prohibits all CARAs outside the playing season one week prior to the beginning of final exams.

The official LSU Thanksgiving holiday begins at 12:30 pm on Wed., Nov. 21 and runs through Sun., Nov. 25. Final exams begin on Mon., Dec 3. Therefore, all CARAs for the fall semester for out-of-season sports must cease at 12:29 pm on Wed., Nov. 21 until the dates listed below (based on each team's declared playing season):

Baseball Jan. 14
Men's Golf Jan. 14
Women's Golf Jan. 14
Soccer Jan. 14
Softball Jan. 12
Men's Tennis Jan. 2
Women's Tennis Jan. 7
Volleyball Jan. 14

Additionally, per University policy, required team functions/gatherings are prohibited during the Concentrated Study and Final Exam periods. Therefore, the final dates to conduct team functions such as occasional meals and student-athlete appearances are Mon., Nov. 26 and Tues., Nov. 27. The Concentrated Study Period begins on Wed., Nov. 28.

Any activity in which a coach is present is considered countable (other than meetings initiated by student-athletes during which no other countable activities occur). For additional details on what constitutes a countable activity vs. what qualifies as voluntary, click HERE.

In-season sports

All activities are permitted during the Thanksgiving holiday, which begins at 12:30 pm on Wed., Nov. 21 and runs through Sun., Nov. 25.

In-season sports may conduct countable athletically related activities (CARAs) during the Concentrated Study and Final Exams Period (if declared in the team's playing season), but must refrain from other team functions such as occasional meals and student-athlete appearances, per University policy. The Concentrated Study period begins on Wed., Nov. 28 and the Final Exam period concludes on Sat., Dec. 8.

In-season CARA regulations (4 hours per day, 20 hours per week, at least one day off per week) are still in effect through the end of final exams. Thereafter, there is no limit on daily or weekly hours during the winter vacation period (Sun., Dec. 9 through Sun., Jan. 13).

The following conditions also apply based on each team's declared playing season:

Men's Basketball N/A
Women's Basketball N/A
Football N/A
Gymnastics No CARAs from Dec. 1 to Dec. 8 and Dec. 14 to Dec. 26
Swimming & Diving No CARAs from Dec. 1 to Dec. 9 and Dec. 20 to Dec. 27
Track & Field No CARAs from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2

Any activity in which a coach is present is considered countable (other than meetings initiated by student-athletes during which no other countable activities occur). The only exception to this rule is for sports with the safety exception - in this case, Gymnastics, Swimming & Diving and Track & Field - which allows a coach to be present during voluntary individual workouts in LSU's practice facilities when a student-athlete uses equipment for that sport. The safety exceptions do not apply to strength and/or conditioning workouts.
